Jump Start is rooted in the following Value Propositions for students.

Make friends.

Everyone attending Jump Start is new to UBC and interested in meeting new people, too. Through your Learning Community, social events, living in residence or spending time in your collegium, Jump Start provides tons of opportunities to meet people and make friends. In addition to other first-year students, you’ll also get to know senior peers, faculty members, staff, and people who will challenge and support you throughout your degree.

Learn how to learn at UBC.

You will be connected to a professor and senior peers from your Faculty, known as your Learning Community, who will work with you and other new students to support your academic transition from high school to university. Through your Learning Community, Learning Lectures, Prof Talks, and other events, Jump Start gives you the opportunity and the time to become comfortable with university learning environments and practice these skills before classes start.

Explore your new home, school, and city.

Jump Start gives you the chance to move into residence early or practice your commute to and from campus and connect to commuter spaces, known as Collegia, where you can find a home away from home while you’re here. You’ll have a chance to begin to understand what it means to learn on the UBC Vancouver campus, located on traditional, ancestral, and unceded Musqueam Territory. And,UBC is a large place that can take time to practice navigating. Arriving early gives you the opportunity and time to find your way around campus, explore the city of Vancouver, and learn about the place where you’ll be studying.

Take care of the essentials.

Jump Start gives you the time and support to get set up and take care of the essentials early. Before classes get started, remove the stress of paying your tuition and buying your books or even setting up your bank account and getting a phone. Jump Start also gives you opportunities to talk to academic advisors, explore on-campus work and volunteer opportunities, find a fitness class, or scope out a great study spot. Taking care of the essentials during Jump Start means you’ll have more time to focus on your new classes, friends, and community later on.
