Jump Start is UBC’s official orientation to life at UBC. First-year students who participate in Jump Start are more likely to be successful in their academic studies than their peers who don’t.
At Jump Start, programming is focused around delivering on four key value propositions for students:
- Make friends: Everyone is new and looking to meet new people; socialize, share meals and get to know other students.
- Learn how to learn at UBC: Get comfortable with university learning environments and connect with professors and senior peers.
- Explore your new home, university & city: Move into residence early, practice your commute, and get to know UBC and Vancouver.
- Take care of the essentials: Before classes start, look after necessities like tuition, textbooks, phones, and banking.
Jump Start is open to all first-year students coming to UBC from high school. In past years, Jump Start has only open to international students. However, because of its proven success in readying new students for life at university, Jump Start is now open to both international and domestic students.
Programming will be delivered to two groups:
- Residence stream: students living in UBC Student Housing
- Collegia stream: students living off campus
